Pet Creator & TikTok Glossary
Plain-English definitions of the terms creators, fans and journalists use to talk about pet TikTok — from hook to oEmbed. Bookmark it; we keep it current.
- Hook
- The first 1–3 seconds of a video, engineered to stop the scroll. On pet TikTok, a hook is often a question, a tease of a transformation, or an irresistible animal reveal.
- For You Page (FYP)
- TikTok's main recommendation feed. Getting 'on the FYP' means the algorithm is pushing your video to people who don't follow you — the main engine of pet-creator growth.
- POV
- 'Point of view' — a video framed as if the viewer (or the pet) is experiencing it directly, e.g. 'POV: your dog realizes you're leaving.'
- Storytime
- A narrative format where the creator tells a story over footage. Rescue and adoption content leans heavily on storytime structure: setup, struggle, transformation.
- Transition
- An edit that visually jumps between two states — the backbone of grooming 'before/after' reveals and glow-up content.
- Sound
- The audio track attached to a video. Using a trending sound can boost reach, because TikTok groups videos by sound and surfaces them together.
- Trend
- A format, sound, or challenge that many creators adopt at once. Riding a trend early — before it peaks — is a common growth tactic.
- Niche
- The specific topic a creator focuses on (e.g. dog training, exotic reptiles). A clear niche helps the algorithm and the audience know what to expect.
- Duet
- A TikTok feature that plays your video side-by-side with someone else's — often used to react to or build on another creator's pet clip.
- Stitch
- A feature that lets you clip and build on to a snippet of another video — commonly used to respond to a pet question or add commentary.
- Watch time
- How long viewers stay on a video. High watch time (and re-watches) signals the algorithm that content is worth pushing further.
- Loop
- A video edited so its end flows back into its beginning, encouraging repeat views — which boosts watch time.
- Engagement rate
- The share of viewers who like, comment, share, or save a video. A strong engagement rate matters more than raw follower count for reach.
- UGC
- 'User-generated content' — content made by everyday users/creators rather than a brand. Pet UGC is the raw material of this hub.
- oEmbed
- An open standard that lets a website request a platform's official embed code for a public post. It's how we display TikTok/YouTube clips here — the video stays on the platform, never re-hosted.
- B-roll
- Supplementary footage cut in around the main shot — e.g. close-ups of a pet's reaction — to add texture and control pacing.
- Jump cut
- A hard edit that removes dead time between moments, keeping a video fast and tight. Comedy pet creators live on jump cuts.
- ASMR
- 'Autonomous sensory meridian response' — quiet, tactile content (brushing, clipping, crunching) that many grooming and feeding videos use to soothe viewers.
- Ratio
- When a reply gets more likes than the post it answers, or comments vastly outnumber likes — a signal of a video that provoked a strong reaction.
- Shadowban
- A creator's belief that the platform is quietly limiting their reach. Often unprovable, but a common part of creator vocabulary.
- Creator fund / rewards
- Platform programs that pay creators based on qualifying views. Terms vary by platform and change often.
- Momentum
- Our own editorial 0–100 score for a creator or clip — a human judgment of originality, consistency and audience value, used for our rankings.
- Glow-up
- A transformation video, most associated with grooming: the bigger the contrast between 'before' and 'after,' the bigger the payoff.
- Foster fail
- When someone fostering a rescue animal ends up adopting it themselves — a beloved rescue-content trope.
- Embed
- Displaying a post from another platform on a web page using that platform's official code. Embedding credits the creator and keeps the content on its home platform.
